The Ministry of National Security has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to acquire a fleet of new patrol and interceptor vessels for the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard (RBRCG). The tender, released this week, seeks state‑of‑the‑art craft capable of rapid response, surveillance and interdiction across the island’s extensive territorial waters.
Officials say the procurement is part of a broader strategy to standardise and upgrade the Coast Guard’s assets. The new vessels are expected to enhance Bermuda’s capacity to conduct search‑and‑rescue missions, enforce fisheries regulations, and deter illicit activities such as smuggling and illegal fishing. A spokesperson noted that the modern fleet would also support the island’s growing offshore energy sector by providing reliable maritime security.
The RFP invites proposals from shipbuilders worldwide and sets a budget ceiling of $30 million. The contracting process is slated to conclude by the end of the year, with delivery expected within 18 to 24 months. Once commissioned, the vessels will operate from the RBRCG’s existing bases in St. George’s and Hamilton.
Local maritime stakeholders, including the Bermuda Marine Association, welcomed the announcement. "Having a modern, agile Coast Guard fleet will safeguard our fishing industry and protect the tourism sector that relies on safe sea travel," said the association’s chair. The government’s commitment to strengthening maritime security is seen as a key component of maintaining Bermuda’s reputation as a safe and well‑regulated maritime hub.
