Artifacts recovered from Bermuda's storied shipwrecks are set to go under the hammer later this month, as items from the personal collection of the late Jaws author Peter Benchley head to auction on October 29.

The pieces were gathered by Benchley and his wife Wendy during their diving expeditions in island waters, where the couple explored the reefs and wrecks that have long made Bermuda a destination for underwater adventurers. Benchley, who died in 2006, was a frequent visitor to the island and drew on his experiences at sea throughout his celebrated writing career.

A spokesperson for the sale said the catalogue also features original production photographs from the filming of Jaws, Benchley's 1975 movie poster for the blockbuster film, his personal typewriters and writing materials, and a T-shirt among other memorabilia spanning his life and work.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit ocean conservation organizations, a cause that became central to Benchley's later years as he campaigned for shark protection and marine preservation — a legacy that resonates strongly in Bermuda, where the surrounding waters are home to some of the Atlantic's most significant reef systems and historic wreck sites.

The sale offers collectors and film enthusiasts alike a rare opportunity to acquire items with a direct connection to the island's maritime heritage, while supporting efforts to protect the oceans Benchley spent a lifetime exploring and defending.
