In a spirited blend of strategy and sweet treats, a group of students from Somersfield Academy organised a community event that generated $940 for the Family Centre. The fundraiser, held on June 17, 2026, combined a student‑led chess tournament—known as Bermuda Gambit—with a bake sale featuring homemade goodies from nearby families.

The initiative was spearheaded by five students: Jameson Feldman, JitHom Liew, Emma Osborne, Ana Na and Brennan Watkins. They coordinated the tournament schedule, recruited participants from schools across Bermuda, and set up a bake‑sale stand at the school’s gymnasium. Local volunteers helped with cooking, packaging, and managing the event’s logistics.

Half of the proceeds came from the chess tournament, where players paid an entry fee to compete in multiple rounds. The remaining funds were raised through the sale of cupcakes, cookies, and other treats donated by parents and community members. The Family Centre, which provides support services to families in need, will use the donation to expand its outreach programs.

The success of the event underscores the growing trend of student‑run charitable projects on the island. School officials noted that the combination of a popular sport and community cooking fostered a sense of unity and gave students practical experience in event planning, fundraising, and teamwork.

"It was amazing to see so many people come together for a good cause," said Jameson Feldman. "We hope to make this a yearly tradition and inspire other schools to follow suit."
