The Bermuda Privateers, the island’s elite 6‑man basketball squad, have unveiled a fundraising drive to secure a professional coach for their upcoming 2026 SSL Gold Cup outing in Rio de Janeiro. Captain Rockal Evans, who has led the team since 2021, is spearheading the effort, hoping to raise US$5,000 through a GoFundMe campaign.
"We’re counting on the support of Bermudians who believe in our team’s potential," Evans said. The funds will cover coaching fees, travel logistics and training expenses that will enable the Privateers to compete at the highest level in Brazil. The SSL Gold Cup, a premier annual competition, attracts top teams from across the Caribbean and Latin America.
The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on sports development in Bermuda. Local businesses, schools and community groups have already pledged backing, with several offering in‑kind donations such as venue use and catering for team events.
By investing in the Privateers, Bermudians are not only backing a national team but also fostering a culture of athletic excellence that can inspire the next generation of island sports talent.
The campaign will run until the end of August, giving supporters ample time to contribute before the team finalises its roster and training schedule.
