Bermuda travelled to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to compete in the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, the world’s largest team chess event, and brought back a strong haul of achievements for the island. Over a two‑week period, 394 national teams vied for the title, with Bermuda’s open and women's squads posting solid results against highly ranked opponents.
The highlight for the Bermudian contingent was the attainment of several FIDE titles. A handful of players earned International Master and FIDE Master norms while others achieved the required rating thresholds for their respective titles. These milestones reflect the steady progress of Bermuda’s chess community and underscore the growing depth of talent on the island.
Local players praised the experience, noting that competing against a wide range of styles and strategies in such a high‑level environment has sharpened their game. The event also provided valuable exposure for Bermuda’s young enthusiasts, who will now have new role models to emulate. Officials from the Bermuda Chess Federation plan to build on this momentum by organising more training camps and youth tournaments over the coming year.
The Olympiad’s record‑setting participation and Bermuda’s commendable performance reinforce the island’s reputation as a committed and competitive chess nation on the international stage.
