Young Bermudians will once again have the chance to take to the open water aboard the Spirit of Bermuda, with the island's flagship sail training vessel set to resume its youth voyages after a two-year interruption.
The Bermuda Sloop Foundation confirmed the return of its signature programme, which offers students hands-on experience in seamanship, teamwork and leadership while sailing aboard the purpose-built sloop. The voyages have long been regarded as a rite of passage for local schoolchildren, combining maritime education with personal development in a unique offshore classroom.
The pause in programming was felt across the community, as the vessel's five-day expeditions have traditionally served hundreds of middle school students each year. Educators and parents have frequently praised the initiative for building confidence and resilience in participants, many of whom had never spent a night at sea before stepping aboard.
Foundation representatives indicated that preparations are under way to welcome students back, with safety protocols and voyage schedules being finalised. Schools are expected to receive information on registration in the coming weeks.
The Spirit of Bermuda, launched in 2006, is modelled on the historic Bermudian sloops of the nineteenth century and remains one of the island's most recognisable vessels. Its return to active youth service marks a welcome restoration of a programme many consider central to preserving Bermuda's rich maritime heritage.
