In a spirited conclusion to the island’s middle school hockey season, Warwick Academy’s girls’ team and Whitney Institute’s boys’ squad secured championships in their respective divisions at the Hamilton Recreation Centre. Warwick’s White side defeated Somersfield Academy 2‑0, while Whitney’s boys clinched the title against St. George’s Bay with a decisive victory.
The girls’ final showcased a methodical start, with both teams locked at 0‑0 through the first 20 minutes. Warwick’s captain, Kaleigh Thompson, opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and a second goal from freshman Mia Roberts sealed the win. Whitney’s triumph followed a similar match‑day narrative, with a clean sheet held by goalkeeper Edwin Johnson and a single goal from senior forward Liam Clarke earning the boys’ team a coveted trophy.
Coaches from both schools praised the players’ dedication and the supportive atmosphere that fans from the wider community brought to the matches. “It is always inspiring to see our students perform at such a high level, especially in a sport that is growing in popularity across Bermuda,” remarked Warwick’s head coach, Mrs. Olivia James.
The championships underscore the vitality of school sport in fostering teamwork and athleticism among Bermuda’s youth, and the event was hailed as a successful showcase of local talent.
