Bermuda Police Service (BPS) confirmed on Tuesday that 42‑year‑old Ryan Cortez, a Filipino national, has died from injuries sustained in a chicken cull accident on the Hurst Road estate. Cortez was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

A BPS spokesperson stated that Cortez had been seriously injured during the culling operation, a routine activity for local poultry farms. The incident occurred early on Wednesday afternoon and prompted an emergency response from the police and ambulance services.

The BPS is cooperating with the Ministry of Labour to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the safety protocols in place at the farm. The incident has raised concerns within the local community about the working conditions of foreign nationals employed in the poultry industry.

Cortez’s family, who are currently in the Philippines, have been notified and are awaiting further information. The BPS has urged farm operators to review safety measures and has promised a thorough review of workplace safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The death of Ryan Cortez highlights the need for stringent occupational safety regulations for all workers on the island, regardless of nationality.
