Marleigh Howes, a 19‑year‑old from Hamilton, stepped onto the international stage this past Tuesday as she swam her first collegiate races for McGill University in Montreal. The 25‑metre CEPSUM pool hosted the opening event of the RSEQ University Cup, a competition that gathers teams from Quebec’s universities.

Howes, a former Bermudian Junior National champion, was part of the McGill Martlets team that finished first in the women’s standings. In the opening eight races, she recorded a personal best in the 200‑meter freestyle, helping secure a podium finish for her squad.

The swimmer’s journey began in Bermuda’s local clubs, where she trained under the guidance of the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association. After earning a scholarship to McGill, she relocated to Canada to pursue a degree in environmental science while continuing her swimming career.

"It’s a proud moment for Bermuda to see one of our own compete and succeed on an international collegiate platform," said Dr. Andre Gordon of the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association. "Marleigh’s performance inspires younger athletes back home to aim high.

Howes will continue to represent McGill in the remainder of the season, and the Bermudian community will be watching her progress with keen interest, hoping her success will translate into future opportunities for Bermuda’s swimming program.
