Two Bermudian sailors have flown the island's flag at one of the premier events on the American collegiate sailing calendar, with Jordan Vieira and PJ Rodrigues representing Eckerd College at the Open Atlantic Coast Championships Round 1A.
The regatta, hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland, drew 17 teams for a demanding opening day of competition. Eckerd College concluded the first day sitting 10th overall after amassing 167 points across ten races in each division.
Vieira took the helm of Eckerd's A Division boat, skippering the crew through a full slate of races, while Rodrigues also featured for the Florida-based institution as part of its campaign at the championship event. Their participation continues a strong tradition of Bermudian sailors competing at the collegiate level in the United States, where the island's young talent has long found opportunities to test themselves against top-tier opposition.
The Atlantic Coast Championships serve as a key qualifying regatta in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association calendar, with teams battling for position ahead of the national championship events later in the season. Strong performances at this stage can prove decisive in securing berths at the sport's biggest collegiate showcases.
For Bermuda, the presence of two sailors at this level underscores the depth of sailing talent the island continues to produce. Both Vieira and Rodrigues will look to help Eckerd climb the standings as the regatta progresses, with further racing still to come before the event concludes.
