Bermuda High School has been crowned champions of the Bermuda School Sports Federation Middle School Girls Under-12 Six-a-Side tournament, prevailing in a tense final against Saltus Grammar School at the National Sports Centre.
The championship match ended scoreless in regulation, sending the contest to a penalty shootout where BHS held its nerve to secure a 2-1 victory and lift the title. It was a familiar path for the young BHS squad, which had also needed penalties to reach the final after a goalless semifinal against Warwick Academy.
Saltus, meanwhile, earned its place in the decider through its own strong run in the competition, setting up a closely fought final between two of the island's leading independent schools. In the end, neither side could find a breakthrough in open play, with goalkeepers and defenders dominating proceedings.
The tournament showcased the growing depth of girls' football in Bermuda's middle schools, with several institutions fielding competitive sides in the six-a-side format. The smaller-sided game, played on reduced pitches, is designed to give young players more touches on the ball and encourage skill development at an early age.
The Bermuda School Sports Federation continues to organise inter-school competitions across a range of sports throughout the academic year, providing students with regular opportunities to represent their schools in competitive settings. The Under-12 girls' football title adds to BHS's proud sporting tradition, and the school's young players will now look ahead to future federation events later in the season.
Parents and supporters turned out at the National Sports Centre to cheer on the finalists, rounding off an entertaining day of schoolgirl football in Devonshire.
