Bermuda’s elite lawn bowlers are packing their bags for a trip to Germany, where the 2026 World Bowling Championships will take place in the historic city of Hamburg from 9–15 September. The national squad, consisting of six athletes—three men and three women—has been training in St. George’s and Hamilton for the past year, honing their precision and consistency on both green and indoor surfaces.
The Bermuda Bowling Association announced the team’s selection early this month after a rigorous trials process that drew more than 20 hopefuls from across the island. Coach Darren Thompson highlighted the players’ resilience, noting that the small‑island crew has adapted to the challenges of limited green access by incorporating indoor sessions and traveling to nearby Caribbean venues for high‑level competition.
While the international tournament presents a formidable challenge against powerhouses such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, the Bermudian bowlers see it as an opportunity to showcase their talent and inspire a new generation of players on the island. In a statement, the team’s captain expressed pride in representing Bermuda on the world stage, adding that the experience will help raise the profile of lawn bowls at home.
The BermudaObserver will follow the squad’s progress and report on their performances during the Championships. Stay tuned for updates from the Green Bay to the German greens.
