Hamilton – Premier John Smith announced his decision to step down from office effective June 30, after a decade of service, citing a desire to focus on family and pursue new opportunities.

Smith, who has overseen a period of sustained fiscal growth and rising employment, said that the foundations of Bermuda’s economy remain strong. "We have built a resilient financial system and expanded our tourism sector," he told reporters from the Government House. "I am proud of what we have achieved and confident that the next leadership will continue to build on this momentum."

The Premier will hand over duties to Deputy Premier Sarah Thompson, who has served as his chief of staff for eight years. Thompson will be sworn in as the first female Premier of Bermuda on 1 July.

Government officials noted that the transition will be smooth, as the cabinet has already begun a succession plan. The Treasury has confirmed that the island’s budget surplus and low public debt will remain intact.

Observers say the move comes at a time when Bermuda faces increased competition in the global financial services market. Smith’s successor will need to navigate new regulatory environments while maintaining the island’s reputation for transparency and stability.

The BermudaObserver will continue to monitor the transition and its impact on the island’s economic outlook.
