Hamilton, Bermuda – The familiar clatter of hooves and the scent of fresh grass have returned to the island’s most cherished racing venue as the 2024 harness pony season officially begins today. The event, held annually at the historic Hamilton Raceway, attracts both local enthusiasts and visitors from the wider North Atlantic region.
The opening race will feature a field of 12 young ponies, each representing a different training stables around the island. Riders, many of whom have been part of the community for decades, will take turns guiding their mounts around the 1‑mile track in a test of speed and endurance that has become a staple of Bermuda’s sporting calendar.
Officials from the Bermuda Harness Racing Association noted that the season’s schedule includes a series of heats and a final championship race slated for late summer. In addition, the association is encouraging increased participation from younger riders, with a new youth program aimed at nurturing talent and promoting the sport among the island’s next generation.
Beyond the excitement on the track, the event also supports local businesses. Vendors and craftspeople line the stands, offering everything from traditional Bermudian sweets to handmade arts and crafts, turning the day into a festive community gathering.
