Bermuda’s restaurant sector is set to benefit from a partnership between Powertranz and Mastercard that will make payments faster and less cumbersome for both diners and eateries.
Starting this month, the two firms will roll out a new payment platform that allows guests to settle bills through their smartphones or a simple tap‑to‑pay card. The technology is designed to reduce transaction times, lower the risk of human error and cut the amount of cash that restaurants have to handle.
Local restaurateurs have welcomed the development. "Customers often complain about long waits for the check, especially during peak lunch hours," said Maria Thompson, owner of The Harbour Café. "A quick, contactless payment option will keep our tables moving and improve overall service quality." The system also includes integrated reporting tools that can help managers track sales in real time, a feature that could aid in inventory management and staffing decisions.
The rollout will focus first on the island’s busiest districts, including Hamilton and St. George’s, before expanding to outlying areas. Both Powertranz and Mastercard are working closely with Bermuda’s regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with local financial and data‑protection regulations.
While the move to digital payments is already a global trend, Bermuda’s small‑town dining culture may see a noticeable shift in how meals are paid for, potentially boosting the hospitality industry’s efficiency and customer satisfaction.
