A Royal Caribbean vessel, the Vision of the Seas, was forced to alter its scheduled itinerary and leave Bermuda’s Hamilton Harbour on Thursday, heading instead toward Canadian waters. The diversion was prompted by a rapidly developing high‑pressure system that produced severe gales and high seas along the North Atlantic, making a safe berth in Bermuda impossible.

Port officials at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Hamilton confirmed that the ship was scheduled to arrive on Friday morning for a three‑day stay, offering a range of shore‑excursions for its 2,200 passengers. "The decision was made in the best interest of safety for the crew, passengers and the local community," said Chief of Port Operations, Captain John Smith. The vessel was rerouted to Halifax, where it is expected to dock on Friday evening.

Tourism operators in Hamilton expressed disappointment at the missed opportunity. "The arrival of a cruise ship of this size brings significant business to our shops, restaurants and tour operators," noted Marie Thompson, manager of Ocean View Tours. "We will certainly feel the impact, but safety is paramount and we respect the decision of the ship’s captain and the port authority.

Bermuda’s cruise sector has been recovering steadily after the pandemic. While the diversion temporarily reduced passenger traffic, officials remain optimistic that future itineraries will again include Bermuda as a desirable stop for trans‑Atlantic voyages.
