In a move that underscores growing concern over the well‑being of Bermuda’s older population, the Ministry of Health announced a new community‑based program aimed at expanding support services for seniors across the island. The initiative will bring together volunteers, local businesses, and health professionals to offer a range of services, including transportation to medical appointments, home‑visit assistance, and social engagement activities.
"Our seniors are the backbone of Bermudian society," said Health Minister Dr. Megan Smith at the launch event held at the Hamilton Town Hall. "This programme will ensure that they receive the help they need, right where they live, and will help prevent the isolation that many face in remote areas like Paget and Southampton.
Under the scheme, volunteers will be trained in basic health monitoring and dementia care, while local pharmacies and pharmacies will provide discounted medication and health‑check packages. The Department of Social Services will collaborate to identify residents who qualify for additional support, such as home‑care aides and emergency call systems.
The launch also highlighted an upcoming survey to gauge the effectiveness of the services and to identify further gaps in senior care. Residents are encouraged to register their interest through the Ministry’s website or by visiting the nearest community centre.
"By working together, we can make sure every senior in Bermuda feels valued, safe, and connected," added Dr. Smith. "This is a step toward a healthier, more inclusive future for all Bermudians."
