Lloyd Burch, a long‑time resident of Hamilton and a pillar of the local education sector, died peacefully on Tuesday evening at the age of 82. Born in 1944, Burch spent his career as a high‑school science teacher at the Island Technical School, inspiring generations of students with his passion for physics and commitment to academic excellence.
Beyond the classroom, Burch was deeply involved in community outreach. He served on the board of the Bermuda Youth Foundation for 15 years, championing STEM programs for under‑represented youth, and was a founding member of the Hamilton Community Garden initiative, turning vacant lots into productive green spaces.
Friends and family noted his humility and sense of humor, recalling his signature “Burch‑style” joke during school assemblies. He was survived by his wife, Margaret, their three children—James, Claire, and Priya—and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Anglican Church on Friday, followed by a burial in the Hamilton Cemetery. The family will accept donations in Lloyd’s name to the Bermuda Youth Foundation and the Hamilton Community Garden. In a statement, Burch’s daughter Claire expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “Dad believed in giving back, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched.”
