The BermudaObserver reports that OBA Member of Parliament Vance Campbell has called for urgent action following the recent closure of Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy. According to Campbell, parents were met at the school’s entrance last week only to find the building shut down due to significant drainage issues. "Families should not be forced to cope with preventable problems," Campbell said, urging the Government to adopt a proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance.
Campbell, who serves as Shadow Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, highlighted that the incident underscores a broader pattern, where inadequate planning leaves schools and other public facilities vulnerable. He urged the Ministry of Education and the Public Works Department to conduct a comprehensive review of all school premises, prioritising those with similar drainage concerns.
The OBA MP also called for a transparent timeline and accountability measures, noting that residents in the area have endured disruptions to their daily routines and educational schedules. He emphasized that the Government’s responsibility is to protect the safety and well‑being of Bermuda’s children.
While the Ministry has yet to issue an official statement, the incident has reignited public pressure for improved oversight of school infrastructure. The community remains hopeful that the government will respond swiftly to restore full operation of the academy and prevent future closures.
