Two Bermuda-based martial artists have returned from the United States with medals after competing at the Pan IBJJF No-Gi Championships in Secaucus, New Jersey.
Jason McAlpine led the way for the Open Mat Bermuda squad, fighting his way to a silver medal, while teammate Christopher Regan secured bronze in his division. The pair were part of a ten-strong travelling contingent representing the island at one of the most prestigious submission grappling events on the international calendar.
The Bermudian roster also featured Greg Maybury Jr, Charles Patten, Ramazan Ramazanov, Ryan Hopkins, Lonnie Bascome, Keegan Dyer, Jahmali Bridgewater and Reina Maypa, all of whom tested themselves against high-level competition from across the Americas and beyond. Team members described the experience as valuable preparation, noting the depth of talent on display at the tournament and the lessons gained from competing on such a large stage.
The results mark another encouraging step for Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Bermuda, where the sport has continued to grow in popularity in recent years. Local clubs have increasingly sent athletes overseas to gain experience, and podium finishes such as those earned by McAlpine and Regan highlight the island's ability to compete internationally despite its small population. The Open Mat team is expected to resume training in Hamilton as it looks ahead to future competitions, with coaches hopeful that the momentum from New Jersey will inspire more Bermudians to take up the sport.
