MP Chris Famous recently outlined the key demographic challenges confronting Bermuda, echoing concerns shared by small, high‑growth economies worldwide. The island’s population, at just over 60,000, is aging rapidly, while birth rates remain below replacement level, creating a widening gap between the young and the old.

Housing affordability continues to strain families, especially new entrants to the workforce who struggle to secure home‑ownership in a market where median prices outpace average incomes. Famous highlighted the need for more supportive mortgage schemes and the expansion of affordable rental stock.

A shift in the labour market is also evident. Fewer young Bermudians are entering technical trades and the hospitality sector, sectors vital to the island’s tourism‑driven economy. The MP called for targeted apprenticeship programmes and incentives for local businesses to recruit and train young talent.

In response, the government has announced a new “Bermuda Workforce Initiative” aimed at boosting skills development, alongside a review of housing policy to increase supply and affordability. These measures seek to mitigate the demographic pressures and secure a resilient future for the island’s economy and communities.
