The Bermudian government has confirmed plans to replace the historic Swing Bridge in the East End, a project that officials say will improve traffic flow, enhance safety and support local businesses.
The current swing bridge, which has served the community for more than six decades, has been flagged by engineers as having reached the end of its useful life. The replacement will feature a modern lift mechanism, wider deck lanes and updated pedestrian walkways, according to a statement from the Department of Infrastructure. The new bridge is expected to reduce congestion during peak hours and accommodate the increasing number of visitors to the area.
Local residents and business owners have welcomed the announcement. "We’ve been dealing with traffic snarls and maintenance issues for years," said a shopkeeper on the south side of the bridge. "A new bridge will make it easier for people to get to work and for tourists to explore our waterfront.", the vendor added.
Construction is slated to begin in early 2026, with a projected completion date of late 2028. The project will be financed through a mix of national funds and a grant from the Commonwealth Infrastructure Fund. The government has also announced a public consultation period to gather feedback from community members and ensure the design meets local needs.
Bermuda's tourism board noted that an improved bridge could attract more visitors to the East End’s historic sites, potentially boosting the hospitality sector. The replacement project underscores the island’s commitment to maintaining essential infrastructure while preserving its unique character.
