Peter Rickards, a seasoned Bermudian football coach, has been appointed director of the women’s football programme at the University of Northampton in England. The move marks a significant step for Rickards, who has spent the past decade developing talent in Bermuda’s local leagues and coaching national youth teams.
In a statement released by the university, Rickards expressed enthusiasm for the new role. "I’m looking forward to overseeing the programme and developing the coaching staff," he said. "I’m in my mid‑fifties and have been looking for a position where I can step back a bit from on‑field duties and focus on building a strong, supportive environment for the players and staff." The appointment follows Rickards’ successful tenure with Bermuda’s U‑17 and U‑20 squads, where he helped the teams secure several regional titles.
The University of Northampton’s women’s football programme has a growing reputation for nurturing talent and promoting a competitive yet inclusive culture. Rickards’ experience at home, combined with his international exposure, is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the squad’s tactical development and player welfare initiatives. For Bermuda, the appointment is seen as a positive sign of increasing recognition for Bermudian coaches abroad.
Rickards will officially begin his duties in early September and will be based in Northampton, while maintaining ties with the Bermuda Football Association to continue supporting the island’s football community.
