On Sunday, the Bermuda Ocean Partnership (BOPP) hosted a panel discussion in Hamilton aimed at aligning the island’s booming tourism industry with marine conservation goals. The event, held at the historic Convention Centre, drew representatives from the Bermuda Tourism Authority, local dive operators, environmental NGOs, and the Department of Marine Resources.
During the dialogue, BOPP’s Executive Director, Marcia Roberts, outlined a three‑phase strategy that includes expanding marine protected areas, implementing stricter waste‑management protocols for tourist vessels, and launching a certification program for eco‑friendly tour operators. “Our goal is to ensure that every dollar spent on ocean‑based activities also supports the health of our reefs and the livelihoods of our communities,” Roberts said.
Industry participants highlighted the need for clearer guidelines on sustainable snorkeling and fishing practices, while conservation groups emphasized the importance of community education and monitoring. The session concluded with a commitment from all parties to develop a joint action plan within six months, setting a precedent for collaborative stewardship of Bermuda’s marine assets.
The initiative has been praised by the local Chamber of Commerce, which noted that responsible tourism could maintain the island’s competitive edge while safeguarding its natural heritage for future generations.
