On October 15th, the Women’s Resource Centre (WRC) marked Purple Thursday with a community‑focused forum titled "Beyond the Crisis: Examining the Systemic Barriers Facing Women Experiencing Abuse." The gathering, held at the WRC headquarters in Hamilton, drew survivors, advocates, law‑enforcement officers, and local policymakers.

Participants discussed the realities of domestic abuse in Bermuda, noting that many victims face obstacles such as limited access to safe housing, financial dependence, and gaps in legal protection. The WRC moderator highlighted that while the Island’s legal framework offers some safeguards, practical support for survivors remains uneven, especially in rural parishes where services are sparse.

The forum also explored ways to strengthen the existing support network. Suggestions ranged from expanding counselling services in community centres to improving coordination between police, health services, and NGOs. A key point was the need for culturally sensitive outreach programmes that reach men and young adults, aiming to prevent abuse before it starts.

Local officials thanked the WRC for facilitating the conversation and pledged to review the recommendations. The event underscored the community’s commitment to creating a safer environment for all Bermudian families, reaffirming that collective action and awareness are essential steps toward lasting change.
