Bermudian middle-distance runner Gabriella Cechini delivered a strong performance for Mercersburg Academy at the Paul Short Invitational, held at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, finishing sixth in her division.

Racing on the Murray H. Goodman Campus course, Cechini covered the women's 5,000-metre Varsity Brown Division event in a time of 19 minutes 9.6 seconds. The Paul Short Invitational is one of the most established collegiate and scholastic cross-country fixtures in the United States, drawing hundreds of athletes from across the region each year.

Cechini is among a growing number of young Bermudian athletes pursuing their education and sporting careers at overseas preparatory schools, where they gain exposure to high-level competition unavailable on the island. Mercersburg Academy, located in southern Pennsylvania, has a well-regarded athletics programme that regularly competes against top schools in the northeastern United States.

Her result adds to an active period for local distance running, with the island's own cross-country series recently getting under way at the Arboretum. Observers will be watching Cechini's progress through the autumn season as she continues to build on her performances for Mercersburg.
