Thomas Cechini, a native of Hamilton, represented Loyola University Maryland in a series of NCAA meets against Navy and Louisiana State University. Competing in four events at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, he delivered solid performances that highlighted his growing stature in U.S. collegiate swimming.
In the men’s 200‑yard freestyle, Cechini finished eighth overall with a time of 1:42.17, the fastest by a Loyola swimmer in that event. He also posted a 50‑yard freestyle time that placed him 11th in the field. While he did not advance to the finals in each race, his results demonstrate consistency and competitiveness on a national stage.
Cechini’s participation underscores the success of Bermuda’s swimmer‑development programs, which have produced several athletes who now compete abroad. His experiences in the U.S. system provide valuable exposure and training that can translate into stronger performances at international meets, including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.
Bermuda’s swimming community welcomed his progress, noting that his presence in NCAA competitions brings attention to the island’s potential in the sport. As Cechini continues training in Maryland, he remains a key figure for Bermuda’s future swimming ambitions, inspiring younger athletes back home to pursue competitive swimming at the highest levels.
