In a heartfelt tribute to a beloved educator who passed away under tragic circumstances, St. Mary’s School in Hamilton has unveiled a new classroom named in honour of former teacher Mrs. Evelyn Carter. The 30‑year‑old teacher, known for her commitment to student learning and community outreach, was lost in a car accident last autumn, leaving a deep void in the local community.

The classroom, now called the Carter Learning Centre, will provide a dedicated space for science and technology projects. According to Principal Michael Rogers, the naming reflects the lasting impact Mrs. Carter had on the school’s culture. “Her spirit lives on in the enthusiasm of our students,” Rogers said.

In a touching development, two current students—Samuel Thomas and Grace Lowe—have chosen to adopt the Carter name in their own birth certificates as a tribute to the late teacher’s influence on their lives. Both students have expressed that they feel a strong connection to Mrs. Carter’s values of curiosity and kindness.

The community has welcomed the initiative, with several alumni and parents attending the ceremony. It serves as a reminder of how one individual’s dedication can inspire future generations, even after an unimaginable loss.

The school plans to hold a small memorial service in the Carter Learning Centre next Tuesday to celebrate Mrs. Carter’s life and legacy.
