A section of the retaining wall along Route 20 near the St. George’s Parish church failed yesterday afternoon, forcing the Bermuda Works Department to close the roadway for safety and repair work. The collapse, which occurred shortly after a heavy downpour, created a temporary obstruction that could not be cleared without further investigation. Local police and emergency services responded immediately, guiding motorists onto a detour via the secondary road to the east of the town.

"The integrity of the wall was compromised by recent saturation of the underlying clay, and we had to act quickly to prevent any further damage or risk to traffic," explained Officer Mark Thompson of the Bermuda Police Service. The Works Department has dispatched a team of engineers to assess the extent of the damage and to determine the best method of reconstruction. Repairs are expected to take 48‑72 hours, after which the route should reopen in full.

Residents in the surrounding area are urged to follow the posted detour signs and to avoid the Route 20 corridor until the wall has been rebuilt. The Department will issue a public notice with updated traffic information as the situation develops. While the incident has caused a brief inconvenience, authorities stress that the safety of motorists and pedestrians remains the top priority.
