On 5 October, the Bermuda Teachers’ Union marked World Teachers’ Day with a message that highlighted the vital role of educators across the island. Union President Dr. Maria Thompson stressed the importance of recognising teachers’ dedication amid ongoing educational reforms, urging the government to maintain funding for classroom resources and professional development.
The message underscored teachers’ contributions to the nation’s social fabric, noting that they are "the backbone of our future generations". Dr. Thompson applauded recent initiatives, such as the expansion of digital learning platforms and the introduction of mental‑health support for students, while also pointing out the need for more classroom space and updated science laboratories.
Looking ahead, the union called on policymakers to ensure equitable pay, reasonable class sizes and timely salary disbursements. It also invited parents, students and community leaders to collaborate on creating a supportive environment for teachers. "When we invest in our educators, we invest in Bermuda’s prosperity," Dr. Thompson concluded, inviting all stakeholders to join in celebrating the profession that shapes the island’s tomorrow.
