A weekend of friendly competition took place at the TN Tatem Tennis Court this Saturday as Bermuda’s Special Olympics athletes participated in a bocce tournament aimed at boosting team morale ahead of the upcoming Island Games in Jamaica. The event, hosted by the Bermuda Special Olympics committee, saw local players and supporters gather to support the athletes’ preparation for the November 18‑23 Games at Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay.

The tournament featured several teams from across the island, with players demonstrating skill and sportsmanship that reflects the community’s commitment to inclusive sport. Organisers noted that the friendly matches serve as both training and fundraising opportunities, helping to cover travel and training costs for the national bocce squad.

Bermuda’s Special Olympics team will represent the island in a range of sports at the Island Games, and the bocce event is a key component of their preparation. According to the committee’s spokesperson, the local showcase has already sparked greater interest in the sport among young athletes, encouraging more participation in future Special Olympics programmes.

Community members praised the event for fostering camaraderie and raising awareness of the challenges faced by athletes with intellectual disabilities. The committee plans to continue hosting similar events throughout the year to maintain momentum ahead of the International Games.

The Island Games in Jamaica promise to bring together athletes from across the Caribbean, offering Bermuda’s Special Olympics team a chance to compete on an international stage and showcase the nation’s dedication to inclusive sporting excellence.
