Bermuda’s health community is poised to participate in a forthcoming International Sleep Care Summit that will be held at the Bermuda Institute of Health on 12‑15 March. The event, organised by the International Society for Sleep Medicine, will bring together clinicians, researchers and allied‑health professionals from across the Atlantic to discuss advances in diagnosis, treatment and public‑health strategies for sleep‑related disorders.

The summit will feature keynote presentations from leading experts in sleep medicine, including Dr. Elena Morales of Boston’s Sleep Institute and Dr. Kazuo Tanaka, a pioneer in circadian rhythm research. Sessions will cover topics ranging from insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea to the impact of sleep on mental health and chronic disease management. Bermuda’s own Dr. Lisa A. Thomas, a consultant in clinical psychology at the Royal National Hospital, is scheduled to present a paper on insomnia prevalence among the island’s tourism workforce.

Sleep health is a growing concern in Bermuda, where the high‑altitude, mild climate and 24‑hour tourist activity can disrupt natural sleep patterns. Recent surveys by the Bermuda Department of Health indicate that nearly 30 % of residents report chronic sleep difficulties. By attending the summit, Bermudian health practitioners aim to bring back evidence‑based protocols that can be integrated into local primary‑care settings.

Beyond knowledge exchange, the conference will offer networking opportunities with international colleagues and pave the way for future collaborative research projects that address Bermuda’s unique sleep‑health challenges.
