Somersfield, one of Bermuda’s leading grocery retailers, has announced a new initiative to investigate artificial intelligence (AI) solutions aimed at streamlining its operations and strengthening ties with local producers. The company said it will pilot AI‑driven analytics to optimise inventory levels, reduce waste, and improve the accuracy of demand forecasting across its seven stores.
"Our goal is to support the island’s food system by ensuring fresh, locally sourced products reach shelves efficiently," said a Somersfield spokesperson. The retailer plans to collaborate with a regional tech firm to develop machine‑learning models that can predict buying patterns based on weather, tourism trends and community events. By doing so, Somersfield hopes to cut excess inventory that often ends up in landfill, aligning with Bermuda’s sustainability targets.
The pilot will roll out over the next twelve months, with a focus on key items such as produce, dairy and seafood that are staples of the local diet. Somersfield also intends to offer staff training on AI tools, ensuring employees can interpret the insights and make informed stocking decisions.
Industry observers note that the move could set a precedent for other island retailers, encouraging a data‑driven approach to supply chain management that benefits both consumers and local farmers.
"Leveraging AI means we can cater to the community’s needs more responsively while supporting our economic ecosystem," the spokesperson added.
The initiative reflects Bermuda’s broader strategy to modernise its retail sector while keeping the island’s unique culinary heritage at the forefront.
