Government marine workers who responded to a boat fire near Saltus Island last month have been recognised with the Public Service Excellence Award, officials have announced.
The crews of the ferries Resolute and Warbaby Fox, the tug Powerful, and the Department of Marine and Ports' Aids to Navigation teams received the honour for their swift and coordinated efforts during the incident. The award celebrates public officers who go above and beyond their normal duties in serving the community.
A Government spokesperson said the response demonstrated the professionalism and readiness of Bermuda's marine services, noting that the quick actions of those involved helped protect lives and property in waters that see regular ferry traffic between Hamilton, Warwick and the West End. The ATON teams, responsible for maintaining the buoys, markers and lights that keep Bermuda's reefs and channels navigable, were credited alongside the vessel crews.
The Public Service Excellence Award is presented to government employees and teams whose work exemplifies outstanding service to the island. Officials said the recognition reflects the vital, often unseen role that marine personnel play in keeping Bermuda's busy harbour and surrounding waters safe for commuters, boaters and visitors alike.
The boat fire near Saltus Island, in the Great Sound area, drew a multi-vessel response and was brought under control without the situation escalating further.
