The Bermuda Health Board (BHB) is embracing a comprehensive digital transformation that is reshaping how medical information is stored, accessed and shared across the archipelago. The move to a fully electronic record system is already generating measurable benefits for both clinicians and patients.

Under the new platform, physicians can retrieve a patient’s full history within seconds, eliminating the need to physically scan paper files or transfer paper records between clinics. The system also supports seamless integration with the national health information exchange, allowing specialists in St. George’s and the Royal Naval Hospital to collaborate in real‑time.

"The digitisation effort has reduced administrative bottlenecks and improved clinical decision‑making," said a BHB executive during a recent briefing. "Patients can now see their own records online through the secure portal, which empowers them to take a more active role in their health.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernise public services in Bermuda, aligning the health sector with the island’s long‑term digital agenda. While the transition has required substantial investment in training and infrastructure, the Board reports that patient wait times have dropped by 12% in the first six months of implementation.

The BHB plans to expand the system to include mental health and chronic disease management modules, aiming for a fully integrated health ecosystem by 2028.
