Students at Whitney Institute Middle School welcomed two professional footballers this week, as Ashley Barnes and another visiting player, Cole, stopped by the Warwick school to meet pupils and share their experiences from the world of professional sport.
The visit gave students a chance to hear firsthand about the dedication, discipline and hard work required to succeed at the highest levels of football. The players spoke with pupils about their careers, answered questions and offered encouragement to young people pursuing their own goals, whether in sport or other fields.
School staff said the appearance was a memorable occasion for students, many of whom are keen footballers themselves. Visits from professional athletes are seen as valuable opportunities to motivate young Bermudians and reinforce positive messages about commitment, education and healthy living.
Whitney Institute has a history of hosting community figures and role models, and administrators indicated they hope to continue bringing inspiring visitors to the school. The footballers' stop in Bermuda also highlights the island's ongoing connection to the international game, with local players and fans alike closely following professional leagues overseas.
